LOVE vs. AI:
Why be lonely?

Author Victoria Hetherington, The Friend Machine: On the Trail of AI Companionship and Professor of Psychology Michael Inzlicht, University of Toronto, moderated by Ronit Novak

Could you love a machine?

As AI systems begin to simulate something that looks a lot like care, attention, memory, responsiveness, even intimacy, the line between tool and companion is starting to blur.

This conversation explored the growing world of AI companionship not as a novelty, but as a shift in how we relate, attach, and define connection. What are we reaching for when we turn to machines? And what happens when they start to meet us there?

Hosted by THE GRAIN, the evening brought together Victoria Hetherington and Michael Inzlicht, in conversation with Ronit Novak at Montauk Bar in Toronto.

The event was pay-what-you-can, with proceeds supporting CAMH and The Grain Foundation.
